Apple released iTunes for Windows yesterday. After the raging success of the iPod and of the iTunes music store on Mac OS, the release of iTunes for Windows was inevitable and widely anticipated. I don’t have a PC, so I haven’t played with it, but it seems to have surpassed even the over-hyped expectations.

I think the best evidence of this is the Slashdot comments about it. Slashdot is populated by people who are generally hostile to both Apple in general and cutesy, consumer-oriented products in particular. You would expect the slashdot crowd to loathe iTunes for Windows. Yet in this case Apple has slashdotters eating out of their hands.

This is a sign of a trend that’s been underway for a couple of years now: Apple is cool among geeks, for the first time ever. A lot of them are realizing that spending endless hours on tedious maintenance tasks for their Linux boxen just isn’t worth the bother. Add to that a steady drumbeat of industry-leading innovations in both hardware and software, and you have a compelling product even for devoted free software bigots.

Another impressive thing about the iTunes rollout is the upcoming “100 million free songs” promotion being done with Pepsi. Pepsi is going to seed 100 million bottles of Pepsi products with “winning codes” redeemable for a free 99 cent song at the iTunes Music store. This is brilliant in so many ways: it’s unlikely that any one person will get enough codes to start a sizable music collection, so anyone using such a code is likely to buy additional music once he sets up his account. Second, since the codes are pure data, they cost Apple and Pepsi nothing if they aren’t redeemed.

If you haven’t checked out the iTunes Music store, you should. It’s a great idea that’s been implemented extremely well. And now that it’s available on Windows, you have no excuse.
